Jen’s overnight decision was to put an end to the name game. She would no longer be a laughingstock. So, Friday she made herself mingle and chat with people, attended sessions (but avoided Velvet’s panel), joined a table of readers for lunch, listened raptly to the guest speaker’s inspired address, and with Cyndi got almost a dozen author autographs. That evening they joined three other conference newbies and Diane and Pat for dinner downtown. The casual outing was filled with camaraderie, sharing of backgrounds, and general gossip about the Con. Jen laughed and dished along with the group until the conversation turned to the evening’s karaoke event when Velvet’s name came up.

“Last year the theme was The Rocky Horror Picture Show, and she came dressed as Dr. Frank N. Furter,” Pat said. “Black wig, red bustier, garters, heels, black stockings—the works.”

“What?” Cyndi said excitedly in Jen’s direction. “Did you know? I can’t even imagine that.”

“Yes. I heard about it,” Jen said, trying to appear unaffected.

“I’d give money to see a picture of Velvet in high heels,” Cyndi said, eyeing Jen who was now leaning back in her chair with her arms crossed.

“Wait, wait, get your money out,” Pat said. “I think I still have my Con photos from last year.” She punched buttons on her phone, flicked her finger rapidly across the screen, and then fist-pumped with satisfaction. “Yep. Here they are.”

The photos showed an amazing transformation. Velvet’s boyish good looks had been enhanced with eyeliner, pearls, and bright red lipstick. Cyndi switched between the three photos with an ebullient smile plastered to her face, and then passed the phone to Jen who had to admit that Velvet looked good. Something stirred in her. She’d been attracted to the freckles, the tousled hair, the tattoos and muscular arms. But this version of Velvet intrigued her just as much.

“She’s beautiful and sexy,” Jen finally said.
